anton, the clothes and the body gesture of the woman make me think this is eastern..i.e one could still quite easily imagine seeing this today. in the west? not so sure.
yes. it reminds me a bit of that knight on your blog too. i looked it up and the origin of the painting is a danish story about hellelil and hildebrandt.
