Meine Person hat sich über alle Lust, welche Geld, Amt usw. geben können, erhoben; ja, ich finde sogar eine Wollust darin, wenn man seine Welt in sich trägt, ohne durch Bande der Genußgierde an das Rad des Weltlaufes gebunden zu sein, wo man als Sklave niedriger Lust der unbedingte und schwache Vollzieher fremder Beschlüsse wird. Ich verstehe es, Menschen und die Welt zu achten; ich verstehe es aber auch, diese und jene zu verlassen...

Die Leute haben mich hier sehr gelobt und dadurch abgestumpft für allen Beifall; der Tadel würde mir besser sein, aber auch nicht mehr wirken. Diese Schule der öffentlichen Meinung muß man durchmachen und, ich glaube, suchen, ganz gleichgültig gegen dieselbe zu werden. Ich bin wirklich stumpf gegen alles Lob und ich mache mir aus dem Tadel blutwenig, weil ich die Rezensenten nicht achte; die wissen den Teufel von Poesie. Ich werde froh sein, wenn ich es zur absoluten Gleichgültigkeit gegen alles Urteil der Welt werde gebracht haben. Lob schläfert ein; Tadel erbittert. Der beste Freund ist das poetische Gewissen. Wir wissen recht gut, wo uns der Schuh drückt, besser als es uns irgendein Rezensent sagen kann.

which is a book that is probably about 100 years old (without year as you would say in a bibliography). without year is actually probably 1904. fraktur, or gothic letters, from a time when one still hat to cut books open. have some uncut ones, don't dare to violate them. the protection of the unread. this lenau book was a birthdaypresent to someone (in 1917), had it since a while (not since 1917) in my homelibrary. of late i have a tendency to rather read my own books. to find out what i could rescue. i am looking forward to the many days this book will accompany me...
